Sensitive Ears? - What You Need to Know About Hypoallergenic Earrings!
If you get itchy or irritated skin when you wear earrings, you probably suffer from a nickel allergy. A lot of fashion jewellery contains nickel – and 10-15 percent of the population is allergic to it.
Nickel Allergic Contact Dermatitis symptoms include an itchy rash or inflamed skin where jewellery containing nickel has been worn. People aren’t born with an allergy to nickel, but can develop one at any time.
The problem has become so prevalent the European Union has placed a nickel ban on jewellery sold there!
Hypoallergenic or nickel free jewellery is ideal for people with sensitivities.
What is hypoallergenic jewellery?
The term "hypoallergenic" or "nickel free" means that either nickel is not present (titanium, platinum, palladium and higher carats of yellow or rose gold - normally 14ct and higher) or nickel cannot be released at levels into the bloodstream high enough to trigger an allergic reaction.
Low carat gold earrings, white gold earrings and silver earrings (unless stated otherwise) often contain nickel and are not hypoallergenic.
Hypoallergenic earrings are usually made with a 316L surgical stainless steel or titanium post. Acute sufferers from hypo-allergy are unlikely to react to jewellery constructed with this type of integrity.
All our earrings are made with high quality titanium and surgical stainless steel posts and hooks, making them ideal for people with sensitivities and allergies.
