Yes it is! System 75 is a state of the art instrument. The earrings are drawn from pre-sterilised vacuum packs and the procedure is completed without any direct touching. The studs are made from surgical stainless steel and are hypoallergenic. After the procedure the stud cartridges are disposed of in their original pack.

The standard Universal Medical System uses a pre-sterilised stud with a separate pre-sterilised disposable cartridge. The instrument requires intermediate level sterilising between procedures.

System 75 utilises a very sharp fine gauge stud. It is a slower mechanism but is not at all invasive. Localised trauma is minimal. The Universal Medical System uses a spring loaded trigger and is fast but gentle. Most people feel no discomfort during the piercing.

YES. System 75 is the appropriate system to use for babies and children. The procedure is normally carried out by two piercers who use two instruments simultaneously. Aftercare of young ones should be carried out or supervised by an adult. Children are unlikely to be diligent about not touching the piercing and completing the appropriate cleaning regime twice a day. Some scrutiny will be necessary.

Studex System 75 is designed to pierce ear lobes and the outer (trailing) cartilage of the ear. There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that tragus (the lug adjacent to the opening of the ear) and noses have been pierced using a piercing instrument. We do not recommend either system be used for these piercings.

6 weeks for an earlobe piercing and 12 weeks for cartilage.

Cartilage is a tough, elastic, fibrous connective tissue found in various parts of the body including the joints, outer ear and larynx. Ear cartilage has a limited blood supply compared to the lobe.

Cartilage ear piercing done with Studex System 75 (or a needle) is a more invasive procedure than lobe piercing. However, the studs are sharp and create very little localised trauma. Short term pain is not significant.

The earrings must be left in the ear continuously for 6 weeks (10-12 weeks for cartilage piercing). After this time, if you have followed our Aftercare Procedure correctly you will be able to change your earrings. We suggest using post-type earrings from our Euro range for the first 6 months from the date of piercing.

If you remove your earrings during the healing process you may not be able to get them back in and risk traumatising the delicate piercing walls and introducing infection. Even a well-healed piercing left without jewellery for more than 24 hours in the first few years can close over. The body is quite amazing at resolving local issues!

This differs all over the world. Ear piercing in many countries (particularly countries with a robust legal system) is controlled by laws or local bylaws. In some New Zealand cities ear piercing requires guardian or parent accompaniment or documented consent for children under 16 years. Body piercings and tattoos normally carry age restrictions of 18 years (without consent). Piercers in cities where no bylaws exist often set their own similar standards.

With ear piercings the age limit is mostly to do with the maturity required to diligently carry out the procedure of aftercare. This is often the most problematic area of any piercing. By 16 one hopes that a person can take responsibility for their ear-piercing for 6 -12 weeks! When younger than 16 the responsibility rests with a parent or guardian.

It is normal for there to be a small amount of local pain and swelling for up to 48 hours after being pierced. Continuing significant pain, swelling or redness may indicate a bacterial infection. If this local "anger" persists consult with your piercer. Seeking medical attention and removing the stud is normally a last resort.

We recommend no swimming until the ears are properly healed (6 weeks for ears, 10-12 weeks for cartilage).

Strangely, no! Sea water, while it contains salt which is good, has as many harmful micro-organisms as your local pool. Six weeks may seem like a long time in the summer but it is not long in winter.
